dhikr picDhikr is a wonderful thing, we can do it almost anywhere and at anytime, and receive multiple rewards. We should understand the dhikr and not just say it with our tongue but with our hearts. It’s not about the quantity but the quality of our dhikr that truly matters.

The Prophet said:
“There is a polish for everything that takes away rust; and the polish for the heart is remembrance of Allah.” [Bukhari]

Keep your tongue moist with the remembrance of Allah with the following dhikr: –
1.The Qur’an is the best dhikr – reciting Surah Ikhlaas is equivalent to one third of the Qur’an.
Whoever recites the last two verses of Surah al-Baqarah at night, they will suffice him. Memorising these passages and others is something that everyone can do, and in reciting them and repeating them there is a great deal of reward.

2.Subhan Allah wa bihamdihi
Allah’s Apostle (saw) said, “Whoever says, ‘Subhan Allah wa bihamdihi,’ one hundred times a day, will be forgiven all his sins even if they were as much as the foam of the sea. (Bukhari)
The Prophet (S) said, “(There are) two words which are dear to the Beneficent (Allah) and very light (easy) for the tongue (to say), but very heavy in weight in the balance. They are: ‘Subhan Allah wa-bi hamdihi’ and ‘Subhan Allah Al-‘Azim.” (Bukhari)
“The most beloved of speech according to Allah is when the servant says, ‘Subhanallahi wa bihamdihi’ (How Transcendent is Allah and we praise him!).” (Muslim)

3.Subhan Allah wa bi hamdih, ‘adada khalqihi, wa rida nafsihi, wazinata ‘arshihi, wa midaada kalimatihi –
Juwayriyah (radiAllahu Anha) narrated in Muslim (2729) that the Prophet (blessings and peace of Allah be upon him) left her house one morning when he prayed Fajr, and she was in her prayer-place, then he came back after the forenoon had come, and she was still sitting there. He said: “Are you still as you were when I left you?” She said: Yes. The Prophet (blessings and peace of Allah be upon him) said: “After I left you I said four words three times, which if they were weighed against what you have said today, they would outweigh it:
‘Subhan Allah wa bi hamdih, ‘adada khalqihi, wa rida nafsihi, wazinata ‘arshihi, wa midaada kalimatihi
(Glory and praise be to Allah, as much as the number of His creation, as much as pleases Him, as much as the weight of His Throne and as much as the ink of His words).”

4.Sayyid al-istighfaar – The Prophet (blessings and peace of Allah be upon him) said: “The best prayer for seeking forgiveness is to say:
‘Allaahumma anta rabbi la ilaaha illa anta, Khalaqtani wa ana ‘abduka wa ana ‘ala ‘ahdika wa wa’dika ma astata’t. A’oodhu bika min sharri ma sana’tu, aboo’u laka bi ni’matika ‘alayya wa aboo’u laka bi dhanbi, faghfir li fa innahu laa yaghfiru’l-dhunoob illaa anta
(O Allah, You are my Lord. None has the right to be worshipped but You. You created me and I am Your slave, and I am faithful to my covenant and my promise (to You) as much as I can. I seek refuge with You from all the evil I have done. I acknowledge before You all the blessings You have bestowed upon me, and I confess to You all my sins. So I entreat You to forgive my sins, for nobody can forgive sins except You).’ Whoever says this during the day, having faith in it and dies before the evening comes, will be among the people of Paradise, and whoever says it during the night, having faith in it, and dies before the morning comes, will be among the people of Paradise.” (Al-Bukhari 6306)

5.“Whoever glorifies Allah (says Subhaan Allaah) thirty-three times immediately after each prayer, and praises Allah (says Al-hamdulillah) thirty-three times, and magnifies Allah (says Allahu akbar) thirty-three times, this makes ninety-nine, then to complete one hundred says Laa ilaaha ill-Allah wahdahu laa shareeka lahu, lahu’l-mulk wa lahu’l-hamd wa huwa ‘ala kulli shay’in qadeer
(There is no god except Allah Alone, with no partner, His is the power and His is the praise, and He is Able to do all things) – his sins will be forgiven even if they are like the foam of the sea.” (Muslim, 939)
Among the adhkaar that may be recited before going to sleep, is that reported in the hadeeth of ‘Ali ibn Abi Taalib (may Allah be pleased with him) who said that Fatimah (upon whom be peace) came to the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) and asked him for a servant. He said, “Shall I not tell you of something that is better for you than that? When you go to sleep, say ‘Subhaan Allaah’ thirty-three times, ‘Al-hamdu Lillah’ thirty-three times, and ‘Allaahu akbar’ thirty four times.” (Reported by al-Bukhaari 4943).

6.It was narrated that Abu Umaamah (ra) said: “The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said: “Whoever recites Aayat al-Kursiy immediately after each prescribed prayer, there will be nothing standing between him and his entering Paradise except death.” (Saheeh, al-Bukhaari).

There are many, many more dhikr and adkhar to be recited for extensive rewards. In Sha Allah I will add them to my blog at another time. But for now let’s get in a habit of reciting the beautiful and very powerful dhikrs that I mentioned above.

Peace be upon you & welcome! I'd love to keep in touch with you so please enter your email address and subscribe! From my heart to yours

Love Maryam Yousaf
