Instagram and most social media sites are full of detailed accounts of our lives. We love to share every little part of our lives, from what we had for breakfast, to where we went to dine, and what magical and wonderful things happened to us. I get it, I really do. We want to share our happiness with the world but unfortunately most of the world is green with envy, and can’t bear to see us happy.

When ‘friends’ see you excelling or enjoying life in ways that they could only dream of, it can develop a ‘spiral’ of envy. These feelings of jealousy or envy have to do with the comparisons that we implicitly make between ourselves and our “friends,” or in many cases, our distant online acquaintances.

Most people realise it’s not healthy to compare themselves to other people, but social media presents abundant opportunities to do exactly that. It leads people to think their life isn’t fulfilling enough and makes them feel depressed. The more someone does this, the less meaningful their life feels, and the feelings of jealousy and envy are ignited.

Al-‘Ayn (Evil Eye)

According to Ibn Hajar, the evil eye is a glance combined with jealousy that comes from a despicable person to affect another’.

According to Ibn Al-Athir, a person is said to have been affected by the evil eye if an enemy or a jealous person has looked at him, and that look has affected him, so that he becomes ill as a result.

The evil eye is like an arrow which comes from the soul of the one who envies and the one who puts the evil eye on another towards the one who is envied and on whom the evil eye is put; sometimes it hits him and sometimes it misses. If the target is exposed and unprotected, it will affect him, but if the target is cautious and armed, the arrow will have no effect and may even come back on the one who launched it.

The Influence of the Soul

There have been many cases where a person has fallen ill and become weak as a result of a glance. The soul of a jealous person is harmful to the targeted person. This is why Allah (SWT) ordered his Messenger (saw) to seek refuge with Him from the evil of a jealous person.

The influence of a jealous person and the harm caused to another person is a fact.  An evil, jealous soul takes on an evil character, and when confronting a targeted person, it affects him with that specific character.

Jealousy stems from the heart's burning desire to see him deprived; the evil eye, on the other hand, emanates from the gaze of the eye.  Therefore, a person with an evil eye may affect a target from which he is not jealous; inanimate things, animals, crops or money.  He may even affect himself with his own evil eye.

A person does not get jealous of his ownself or his wealth, but he may affect these with his evil eye.

Who’s Most Affected

Just about anyone can be afflicted by the evil eye. However, others are at a greater risk and more vulnerable. Women and kids are at a greater risk of being afflicted. The risk increases further more for those who are newly-wed, pregnant or beautiful.

Symptoms of the Evil Eye

Primary symptoms of the evil eye are feelings of physical and/or emotional tiredness, unexplained bad luck or unfavourable incidences and illness. It is thought to cause drowsiness, drooping eyelids, fatigue, weariness, lack of concentration, restlessness, discomfort, cramps, convulsions, headaches, clumsiness, stomach pains, dry coughs, hair loss, dry skin, vomiting, the drying up of the milk of nursing mothers and livestock, problems with the blood and eyesight, impairment of sexual activity, impotence, sterility, disorders in menstruation, problems in pregnancy and childbirth, deficient breast milk, mastitis, and among babies and young children, incessant crying and fretting, a baby’s refusal to suckle or drink milk and sudden loss of business etc.

Prayers for Refuge

One of the greatest means of protecting and combating oneself against the evil effects of the evil eye/envy is to persist in regularly reciting the Adhkaar. Say in the morning and in the evening (thrice):

“A‘udhu bi kalimat Allaah al-taammaat min sharri ma khalaq”. I seek refuge in the Perfect Words of Allah from the evil of what He has created.”

“A’udhu bi kalimaat-Allaah il-taammah min kulli shaytaanin wa haammah wa min kulli ‘aynin laammah”. I seek refuge in the perfect words of Allah from every devil and poisonous reptile, and from every envious evil eye. (thrice):

“Bismillahi alladhi la yadurru ma’ ismihi shai’un fil-ardi wa-laa fil-samaa’i wa huwa al-Samee’u al-‘Aleem” (thrice):

“In the Name of Allah, with Whose Name nothing on the earth or in the heaven can cause harm, and He is the All-Hearing, the All-Knowing.”

Put your hand on the afflicted person’s forehead and say:

  • “Bismillaahi yubrika min kulli da’in yushfika wa min sharri hasdin ‘iza hasada wa min sharri kulli’ayn.)

In the name of Allah, He will heal you from any illness He will cure you, from the evil of the jealous when he gets jealous, and from the evil of the jealous when he gets jealous, and from the evil of a person with an evil eye.

To prevent anyone from unintentionally casting an evil eye through praise, it is recommended to say ‘Ma sha’a Allah wa la Kuwata illa Billah’

(Whatever Allah wishes and there is no Power except with Allah).

I have heard via some Scholars that saying Masha'Allah is not the correct phrase to repel the evil eye and instead what should be said to ward of the evil eye is:

Directly to a Person: BarakAllahu feek/feekum (may Allah bless you) If direct person is Female: BarakAllahu feeki (may Allah bless you) To a Male: Allahumma Barik lahu (may Allah bless him) To a Female: Allahumma Barik laha (may Allah bless her) To an object such as a Car, etc: BarakAllahu laka fiha (may Allah bless it)

Recite the chapters: Al-Ikhlas, Al-Falaq and An-Nas (112/113/114 for protection.

Beware

I hope this blog has made you aware of the evil eye, the dangers of social media and the detrimental effect it could have on our lives. May Allah (swt) protect us all from the evil eye and hasad, Ameen.

Please note that I’m not a scholar or a specialist in this field. I have shared some important knowledge which I believe everyone should be aware of. I have kept it quite brief.  But if you feel you are suffering from the evil eye or need expert advice then please contact a trusted Raqi or see a doctor for any health related problems. I would also discourage you to seek protection from any kind of amulet, or anything that can’t be proved by the Qur’an and the Sunnah of the Prophet (pbuh).

The Prophet (pbuh) said: Beware of ENVY because envy consumes (destroys) virtues just as fire consumes FIREWOOD. Abu Dawud

Authentic Proofs of Evil Eye Jabir quoted the Prophet (peace and blessing upon him) as saying:” Most of the deaths of my people, after Allah’s Qadha(Preordainment) and Qadar(Destiny), are caused by the evil eye.” Transmitted by Al-Bukhari in At-Tarikh, and classed by Sheikh Albani as authentic in Sahih Al-Jami'(4144) A’isha reported: ”The Prophet (peace be upon him) used to tell me to seek Ruqya against the evil eye. Al-Bukhari: 10/170 and Muslim: 2195 “And verily, those who disbelieve would almost make you slip with their eyes (through hatred)” [al-Qalam 68:51] Ibn ‘Abbaas and others said, commenting on this verse: this means, they put the evil eye on you with their glances. The Prophet (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) said: “The evil eye is real and if anything were to overtake the divine decree, it would be the evil eye. When you are asked to take a bath (to provide a cure) from the influence of the evil eye, you should take a bath.” Narrated by Muslim. Al-Nasaa’i
