I’m not going to lecture you about wearing the hijab but I will encourage you to embrace this crown given to you by your Lord. We all have struggles, not wearing a hijab doesn’t make you any less of a Muslimah or less pious (Allah knows best) but it does make you fall into sin. And by not wearing the Hijab we are not obeying Allah (SWT).

I’m going to keep this blog brief and to the point. There is so much on Hijab, but as the title of my blog indicates this blogs aim is to give you tips on how to wear the hijab and basically make it easy for you. Obviously there is way more to the Hijab than just covering your head but in this blog the focus is on the physical hijab i.e. the hijab for your hair.

So like everything, change begins with the intention and the niyaah. Therefore, no matter if you are a non hijabi, never thought about wearing it, want to wear it but don’t know where to start then this blog is for you.

1. Realise and accept despite all the arguments for the hijab, including all the social benefits that the most important reason to wear it is because Allah, our Creator has commanded us to and has made it compulsory.

2. Make the Niyaah and the intention to embrace the hijab fully.

3. Expand your knowledge on the hijab as a whole, and on exactly what Allah requires of us woman in particular. Read books, listen to speeches about hijab, in sha Allah this will motivate you and give you the passion to wear it.

4. Set yourself small goals and a deadline may it be a day, week or even a year in which you will fully fulfil this commandment. . Even if you don’t want to wear it straight away, at least make the intention to wear it one day.

5. Please note there is no guarantee that you will even live another day, or another hour so to be on the safe side its best to wear the hijab immediately.

6.Realise every time we do not wear the hijab, we are disobeying Allah (May He forgive us and make it easy on us).

7. Understand that He loves us and He looks at our intention so if we are genuinely striving to wear it and repent to Him, that He is the Most Generous, He is the Most Merciful and Forgiving.

8. Make dua to Allah (SWT) to make it easy for you and take this command seriously. Remember when We walk to Him, He Allah (SWT) will run to us and make it so much easier for us In Sha Allah.

9. Everyone is different, we all have different battles. So if you can wear the hijab immediately and already do observe the hijab then mashallah, well done to you. But please, if a fellow sister doesn’t wear a hijab don’t think that they are any less than you. The truth, even though it can be difficult to digest for some, is that sometimes the non-hijabi sister can be more pious and excellent in manners and worship, than the visually practising sisters. And it maybe (I have witnessed this myself), that the only thing she might be lacking is the physical aspects of worship i.e. hijab and dressing modestly. But with time, encouragement and knowledge in sha Allah she will soon embrace the hijab aswell.

10. If you find the hijab particularly difficult and daunting then please do not give up. It may take you longer than others, but if you keep trying In Sha Allah you will get there eventually. May Allah reward us all for our efforts in pleasing Him even if we don’t quite fully get there. I would suggest the following tips to those of my sisters who find it really challenging:

-Buy a hijab; borrow your mums, sisters, friends if you have to.
-Try a few on, choose one that you like and is comfortable to wear.
-Try wearing it at home at first, infront of your immediate family. (Yes, they may talk at you and throw comments at you like ‘what’s the point wearing it at home, the whole point is to wear it infront of others etc.’. Explain to them that you just want to get used to wearing it in your comfort zone at first and to get the feel of it and to support you and not to discourage you.
-Once you feel comfortable wearing it around your family, next try to wear it around your friends, on the weekend, in the evenings etc. Start wearing it at places where you feel less challenged and comfortable. (Yes for some people it takes a thousand baby steps so please just keep reading on!).
-Remember you are wearing it or trying to wear it for Allah and not as a fashion statement so don’t worry if it doesn’t look perfect or isn’t all fancied up, simplicity is the best.
-In Sha Allah once you get more comfortable and confident then step it up a notch. Keep stepping up the ladder until one day you are at the top and wear it completely.
-Please make it a priority and have a genuine and serious niyaah to wear it.

11.Don’t let people & the shaytaan get you down

I have noticed and you will probably also experience when you try to do something good, that everyone just tries to drag you down. Instead of encouragement its discouragement they will give. Comments such as ‘what’s the point wearing it here and there and not everywhere’, ‘don’t wear it like that, wear it like this’ ‘you are not good enough to wear it’ ‘omg, how can you wear it sometimes and not wear it other times, you are sinning even more’ and ‘blah blah blah blah blah’.

Just thank them for their advice and just think. Where were they when you weren’t wearing the hijab? Where were they when you needed encouragement to wear it? Where were they when you were sinning all the time by not wearing it at anytime. Why were they not saying then ‘wear the hijab, it’s a commandment’ and encouraging you. Instead of now, when you are trying, when you are making a sincere effort to please and obey your Lord, why now eh?
Just tell them politely, thank you for your concern but this is between me and my Lord. I am finding it extremely difficult to put it on and I am trying my best in the best way in which I can to fulfil this commandment, you may not understand it or even agree with it but I am trying to please Allah (SWT). If you don’t have anything positive to say then please don’t make it harder on me lest I give up wearing it all together because of something you have said.

People will give you genuine advice, I am not saying to ignore it but for those who have nothing positive to say and say wear it completely or don’t wear it at all this is for them. Not everyone understands the struggles of a person and you know something it doesn’t really matter what they say or don’t understand as long as you, yourself are making a genuine effort, and are striving to please Allah (SWT) then that is what matters in the end. So keep going, keep on striving dear sister. And of course, it’s better to wear it completely and for good, but these tips are only for those who will probably never wear a hijab unless they start with baby steps as such as this.

12.Strive to wear the hijab fully and constantly make dua to Allah to put the love of hijab (in all aspects) and haya in your heart and to make your task easy for you.

I hope this blog has benefited you and In Sha Allah motivated you to embrace the crown given to you by your Creator. It is essential that you know that we are obliged to follow the commands of Allah and His Messenger (saw), no matter how difficult that may be for us.

The believer who is sincere in his faith is the one who is sincere in carrying out his duty towards his Lord and obeying His commands and avoiding that which He has forbidden. No believer, man or woman, has the right to hesitate or delay with regard to commands; rather he or she should hear and obey immediately, in accordance with words of Allah (interpretation of the meaning):
“It is not for a believer, man or woman, when Allah and His Messenger have decreed a matter that they should have any option in their decision” [al-Ahzaab 33:36]

This is the case with the believers who are praised by their Lord in the aayah (interpretation of the meaning):

“The only saying of the faithful believers, when they are called to Allah (His Words, the Qur’aan) and His Messenger, to judge between them, is that they say: “We hear and we obey.” And such are the successful (who will live forever in Paradise).

And whosoever obeys Allaah and His Messenger , fears Allaah, and keeps his duty (to Him), such are the successful” [al-Noor 24:51-52]

A sin may appear insignificant in the eyes of a person when before Allaah it is serious, as Allah says (interpretation of the meaning):
“you counted it a little thing, while with Allah it was very great”
[al-Noor 24:15]
