Monday  and Thursday for me is a day that I choose to fast. My intention is to fast every Monday and Thursday of my life In’sha Allah (God willing). Fasting on Monday and Thursday is a Sunnah, which I encourage all of you to do.

So what exactly is a Sunnah?

For those of you that don’t know, Sunnah is a way/manner, or a way of life. But when we talk about the Sunnah from an Islamic perspective we are referring specifically to the way, the sayings and teachings of the Prophet Muhammad, peace be upon him.

Please note, that I’m not a scholar but just a Muslim woman who has a lot of love for the Sunnah and the Deen.

Don’t Hate Mondays!

We are constantly surrounded by the Monday groans, which we pretty much probably are guilty of ourselves. ‘I hate Mondays’, ‘Why do Mondays exist’ etc. but we fail to realise just how wonderful and an important a day Monday is.

Yes, of course we all love our weekends, and try our best to hold on to the last few minutes we have before the same old routines begin but we shouldn’t hate Mondays.

Why you ask? Well firstly, because Monday was the very day that the greatest man that ever walked the face of the Earth was born, may peace and blessings of Allah be upon him.

Monday was the day in which the Prophet (pbuh) said he received revelation. And Monday is one of the days in where our Lord, Allah (swt) looks at our deeds.

Some of the Benefits of Fasting

Fasting will:

  • Rest the digestive system
  • Allow for cleaning and detoxification of the body
  • Create a break in eating patterns, while shining a spotlight on them
  • Promote greater mental clarity
  • Cleanse and heal “stuck” emotional patterns
  • Lead to a feeling of physical lightness, increasing energy level
  • Promote an inner stillness, enhancing spiritual connection
  • Help you lose weight

Secret of Living Longer is to Fast Twice a Week

Did you know that fasting twice a week could be the key to a longer life by slashing the risk of a host of killer diseases. Research shows dramatically cutting the amount of calories you eat for two days can keep obesity, heart disease and diabetes at bay.

Never underestimate a Sunnah

All the health, medical, and mental reasons of fasting are just too many to list here. But it is absolutely amazing how 1400 years ago the Prophet Muhammad pbuh advised us to fast twice a week and only recently Doctors and researchers are realising the benefits.

This clearly shows that there is wisdom behind every Sunnah and we benefit in unmeasurable ways without even knowing about it!

Qur’an & Hadith regarding Fasting

“[Allah says:] Fasting is Mine and it is I Who give reward for it.”

(Al-Bukhaari, Fath, no. 1904)

“There is nothing equivalent to fasting.”

(Al-Nisaa’i, 4/165; see also Saheeh al-Targheeb, 1/413)

“The prayer (du’aa’) of the fasting person will not be refused.”

It was narrated from Abu Qataadah al-Ansaari that the Messenger of Allah (salAllahu ‘alayhi wa sallam) was asked about fasting on Mondays. He said:

“On that day I was born, and on it the Revelation came to me.”

Narrated by Muslim, 1162.

It was narrated that ‘Aa’ishah (may Allaah be pleased with her) said: The Prophet (salAllahu ‘alayhi wa sallam) was keen to fast on Mondays and Thursdays.

Narrated by al-Tirmidhi, 745; al-Nasaa’i, 2361; Ibn Maajah, 1739; classed as saheeh by al-Albaani in Saheeh al-Targheeb, 1044.

It was narrated from Abu Hurayrah (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Messenger of Allaah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said:

“Deeds are shown (to Allaah) on Mondays and Thursdays, and I like my deeds to be shown when I am fasting.”

Narrated by al-Tirmidhi, 747; classed as saheeh by al-Albaani in Saheeh al-Targheeb, 1041.
